Why Shopify product count and Meta catalog item count differ
Shopify counts products and variants separately. Meta generally counts each synced variant as a catalog item, so the two headline numbers are not expected to match.
Common causes
- One Shopify product can contain many variants.
- Draft, digital, free or unpublished products may be excluded.
- An invalid variant may be rejected while its siblings sync.
- Old items can remain during synchronization.
What to check first
- Compare Meta items with Shopify variants, not Shopify products.
- Filter to products available on Facebook & Instagram.
- Review rejected variants and recently deleted products.
- Wait for synchronization before treating a temporary difference as loss.
How to resolve it
- Use product and variant counts side by side.
- Repair excluded variants individually.
- Investigate only the unexplained remainder after eligibility filters.
